Are Jellyfish Common in Cyprus?
Jellyfish aren’t very common in Cyprus, but you might come across them occasionally, especially along the southeastern and southern coasts.
One type you often hear about is the Rhopilema nomadica, or the nomad jellyfish.
This jellyfish is known for its large size and powerful sting, and it has been popping up more in the Mediterranean Sea due to climate change and shifting ocean currents.
Personally, we’ve never run into one in Paphos.
There have been, however, reports of jellyfish in Larnaca, Protaras, and Ayia Napa, but they usually aren’t considered a major issue.
Generally, jellyfish are more common in Cyprus during the warmer months (from late spring to early autumn).
According to online chatter, some beaches, like Konnos Beach, may have more jellies than others.
But hey, at least it’s not sharks!
How to Stay Safe
Although you won’t see too many jellyfish in Cyprus, it’s always a good idea to be prepared!
Here are some key safety tips:
- Check Local Reports – Before heading to the beach, check for any local warnings or reports about jellyfish in the area.
- Keep an Eye Out – If you see jellyfish in the water, either avoid swimming or wear a wetsuit to protect yourself from stings.
- Consider Swimming Elsewhere – Jellyfish are rarely seen in Paphos, so if you’re worried about running into them, it might be worth visiting!
- Know What to Do – In case you do get stung, wash the wound with seawater (not fresh water) and seek medical attention as needed.
